What Kundli matching actually measures

Ashtakoota Guna Milan compares eight qualities between two birth charts and assigns each a weight, adding up to thirty-six points. The weights are not equal: Nadi carries eight points and Varna only one, which reflects the classical view that constitutional compatibility matters more than temperamental rank. Because every koota is derived from the Moon, the whole system is a comparison of two lunar positions rather than of the charts as a whole.

How this score is calculated

Both charts are computed with the Swiss Ephemeris using the Lahiri ayanamsa, then all eight kootas are derived from the Moon's sidereal nakshatra and rashi in each chart. Six kootas come from the nakshatra and two from the rashi, which is why matching needs only the Moon. Where traditions differ, we use the whole-sign Vashya assignment and the three-tier Yoni reading, and we publish the tables rather than describing them vaguely.

How this score is calculated

What it does not measure

Guna Milan ignores the Ascendant, the seventh house of marriage, the positions of Venus and Mars, and the dasha periods each person is running. A traditional astrologer would examine all of those before forming a view. A high score with a difficult seventh house is not obviously better than a moderate score with a strong one, which is why we show the koota breakdown rather than only the total.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good Guna Milan score?

Eighteen out of thirty-six is the traditional minimum for a match to be considered workable. Twenty-five to thirty-two is regarded as very good, and above thirty-two as excellent. Below eighteen, classical texts advise against the match. A perfect thirty-six is essentially unreachable, because identical Moon nakshatras trigger Nadi dosha and forfeit eight points.

Which details do I need for Kundli matching?

The date, time and place of birth for both people. Ashtakoota matching is derived entirely from the Moon's position in each chart, so an accurate birth time matters most for getting the Moon's nakshatra right, particularly if the Moon was near a nakshatra boundary.

What is Nadi dosha and how serious is it?

Nadi dosha occurs when both charts share the same Nadi, which forfeits the heaviest koota and eight of the thirty-six points. Classical texts describe several cancellations, including the two Moon signs sharing a lord, both Moons occupying the same nakshatra, or the Moon signs being the same. It is one factor among many rather than an automatic disqualification.

What is Bhakoot dosha?

Bhakoot dosha arises when the two Moon signs sit in a 6-8, 5-9 or 2-12 relationship to each other, forfeiting all seven Bhakoot points. It is traditionally regarded as cancelled when the two Moon sign lords are the same planet or natural friends.

Does a low score mean the marriage will fail?

No. Guna Milan is one traditional compatibility layer, and it looks only at the Moon in each chart. It does not consider the Ascendant, the seventh house, Venus, Mars, or the dasha periods either person is running, all of which classical practice examines before drawing conclusions. Treat it as one input, not a verdict.

Is this Kundli matching free?

Yes. The full Ashtakoota breakdown, dosha checks and Mangal Dosha comparison are free and need no sign-up.
